What is Dimension Door 5E?
Dimension Door 5E is a 4th level conjuration spell, which is available natively to Bards, Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Wizards. It only requires a vocal component and takes an action to cast. When cast, you teleport up to 500 ft. to a destination that you can either see, visualize, or specify by denoting the distance and direction traveled, such as 60 ft. forwards and 40 ft. up or 200ft. Southeast at a 60-degree angle.
You can bring any object that you are able to carry and which doesn’t exceed your carry capacity limit, in addition to one other creature of your choice. The creature must be willing, within 5 ft. of you when you cast the spell, it must be carrying only what is within its carrying capacity, and it must be your size or smaller. For example, a human could teleport a halfling in this fashion but not vice versa.
If the destination you have chosen is already occupied by a creature or object, the spell instead doesn’t teleport you, and both you and any creature you are attempting to teleport each take 4d6 force damage. The spell failing in this manner still consumes the spell slot.
Is Dimension Door 5E a good spell?
Dimension Door is a great spell for a few reasons, most notably it is the furthest distance teleport available at this level of spell. Being able to bring an additional creature with you when you teleport is also not common for many lower-level teleportation spells and features. Additionally, the ability to teleport without needing to see your destination makes it much more reliable to cast than a lot of other teleportation options, for example, you could teleport to the other side of a vault door just by estimating the amount of distance you need to travel. It is not without its hangups however, teleporting blind has a decent chance of ailing and injuring you and your companion. Also, it can be a lower-value spell for small races, as they are unable to teleport medium or larger creatures along with them due to the spell specifying the additional creature must be your size or smaller.
The main way to enhance this spell is through the Sorcerer’s Metamagic feature, which you can also gain a portion of with the Metamagic Adept feat. For example, using Quickened Spell would allow you to teleport as a bonus action and use your action for an offensive cantrip and the Subtle Spell option would allow you to cast Dimension Door without any components. This is very valuable for avoiding being targeted by Counterspell and also escaping being bound when you are also gagged or teleporting in an area affected by the Silence spell.
