Build
Classes
Only the first character level uses the maximum hit die. Later levels (including other classes) use average or a roll.
Level ledger
| Lvl | Class | Die | CON | Bonus | Gain | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fighter | 10 (max) | +2 | — | 12 | 12 |
| 2 | Fighter | 6 avg | +2 | — | 8 | 20 |
| 3 | Fighter | 6 avg | +2 | — | 8 | 28 |
| 4 | Fighter | 6 avg | +2 | — | 8 | 36 |
| 5 | Fighter | 6 avg | +2 | — | 8 | 44 |
How HP is calculated
- Level 1: maximum hit die + Constitution modifier + flat bonuses.
- Later levels: average (die÷2+1) or a roll + CON + bonuses. Multiclass levels never use the maximum die.
- Tough adds +2 per character level. Dwarven Toughness (Hill Dwarf in 2014; all dwarves in 2024) adds +1 per character level.
- Draconic Resilience adds +1 only for sorcerer levels.
- Characters gain at least 1 HP per level when the minimum toggle is on (PHB rule).
- Monster HP averages use (die+1)/2 × HD + CON×HD, matching Monster Manual notation.
- Reference averages: d6→4, d8→5, d10→6, d12→7.

How to use the Hit Point Calculator
- Pick 2014 or 2024 rules so Dwarven Toughness is labeled correctly.
- Set your Constitution as a modifier or ability score.
- Add class levels — the first row is your starting class (max die at level 1). Use + Add multiclass and reorder rows if you started in a different class.
- Toggle Tough, Dwarven Toughness, and Draconic Resilience, or enter a custom +HP-per-level bonus.
- Choose Average, Rolled, or Mixed, then read the live total and open the level ledger to edit individual rolls.
Class hit dice
- d12 — Barbarian
- d10 — Fighter, Paladin, Ranger
- d8 — Artificer, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Rogue, Warlock
- d6 — Sorcerer, Wizard

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate HP in D&D 5e?
At 1st level you take the maximum of your class hit die plus your Constitution modifier. At each later level you either take the average (half the die + 1) or roll the die, then add your CON modifier and any flat bonuses such as Tough or Dwarven Toughness.
What is the average HP per hit die?
Player characters use die÷2+1: d6→4, d8→5, d10→6, d12→7. Monsters use (die+1)/2 instead — for example a Medium creature’s d8 averages 4.5 per hit die.
How does multiclassing affect hit points?
Only your first character level uses the maximum hit die. Every level after that — including levels in a new class — uses that class’s average or a roll. Tough and Dwarven Toughness still apply once per character level; Draconic Resilience applies only to sorcerer levels.
What does the Tough feat add?
Tough increases your hit point maximum by 2 for every level you have. When you gain a level later, you gain +2 more. Taking Tough mid-campaign still applies retroactively to your current level.
Hill Dwarf vs Dwarven Toughness in 2024?
In the 2014 rules, Hill Dwarves get Dwarven Toughness (+1 HP per level). In the 2024 Player’s Handbook, Dwarven Toughness applies to all dwarves. The math is the same; use the edition toggle to label it correctly.
Does Draconic Resilience stack with Tough?
Yes. Draconic Resilience adds +1 HP per sorcerer level, while Tough adds +2 per character level. They stack. This calculator only grants the Draconic bonus on sorcerer levels so multiclass builds stay accurate.
Can I calculate monster HP?
Yes. Switch to the Monster tab, pick a size (which sets the hit die), enter hit dice and CON, or paste a Monster Manual formula like 8d10+16. You can show the average, roll once, or mass-roll for mooks.
