A play-first D&D 5e character sheet — Build to create your character, Play to roll checks and attacks, track HP and resources, then export a classic letter-size PDF when you need paper. Autosaves in your browser; no account required.

How to use this character sheet

  1. Switch to Build to set identity, ability scores, attacks, inventory, features, and spells.
  2. Switch to Play for the session dashboard: sticky HP/AC, click-to-roll, rests, and resources.
  3. Use the tabs (Overview, Combat, Skills, Inventory, Features, Background) for focused sections.
  4. Open Export for a three-page printable PDF, or Share to copy a link to your sheet.

What gets calculated for you

  • Proficiency bonus from character level (PHB table)
  • Ability modifiers and proficient saving throws
  • Skill bonuses, including expertise (double proficiency)
  • Initiative from Dexterity (override when needed)
  • Attack hit bonuses from ability + proficiency
  • Passive Perception, Insight, and Investigation
  • Carrying capacity from Strength for structured inventory

PDF export

Export → Download PDF creates three letter-size pages matching the classic sheet layout — combat and skills, appearance and allies, and full spellcasting with slots. The web UI stays optimized for play; PDF is the print layout.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official D&D Beyond character sheet?

No. Dice Cove’s character sheet is an independent free tool for tracking a D&D 5e character. It is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast or D&D Beyond.

What is Build vs Play mode?

Build mode is for editing class, abilities, equipment, and features. Play mode hides the form clutter and focuses on rolling checks, attacks, damage, HP, conditions, and spending resources at the table.

How does PDF export work?

Use Export → Download PDF for a three-page letter-size sheet that mirrors the classic 5e layout (main sheet, details, spellcasting) with Dice Cove branding and calculated modifiers filled in.

Are ability modifiers and skill bonuses calculated automatically?

Yes. Ability modifiers, saving throws, proficiency bonus by level, skill bonuses (including expertise), initiative, attack bonuses, and passive Perception / Insight / Investigation update as you edit.

Where is my character saved?

The sheet autosaves to local browser storage and to the page URL hash so you can bookmark or share a link. Use Export → Download JSON for a portable backup.

How do I mark skill proficiency or expertise?

On the Skills tab, click the proficiency control to cycle none → proficient → expertise. In Play mode, click a skill name or the roll button to roll a d20 with your bonus.

Does this replace the Player’s Handbook?

No. Use this sheet for convenience at the table. Always follow your DM’s rulings and consult official source books for class features, spells, and rules text.

Need ability scores first? Try the point buy calculator. For combat nights, open the initiative tracker or the dice roller.
