Famous for their discipline and martial prowess, these goblinoids are rumored to hail from the Feywild originally. The hobgoblin race was first published in Volo’s Guide to Monsters (VGtM), and an updated version was more recently published in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse (MPMM). This is a separate version and does not overwrite the original, it just presents a different way of playing a hobgoblin using more current design conventions.

A martial people

Hobgoblins are physically the Goldilocks of goblinoids, being larger than goblins but nowhere near the height and musculature of bugbears. In contrast to their cousins, they are renowned for their discipline and martial prowess, creating an organized military force that can even incorporate powerful spellcasters into their ranks.

Goblinoids as a whole are rumored to have their origins in the Feywild, however, other tales speak of their creation by the god Maglubiyet, either way this god is said to have imparted the discipline and talent for soldiery that makes hobgoblins famous. This leads hobgoblins to often form tight-knit communities with deep ties to each other, be it in the martial legions they create or more civilian lifestyles.
